How to find an acupuncturist

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been making headlines in the past few years. Acupuncture for infertility, for migraines, weight loss, addiction and pain management, (just to name a few). TCM is the oldest existing practice of medicine the world has seen. There is a reason it has been around for at least 2500 years, (some suggest 7000 years). Under the legal scope of practice in this state a practioneer of TCM can not only perform acupuncture but, herbal prescriptions, electo-acupuncture, acupressure, a technique called “tui-na” (this translates “to push and pull”), very gentle soft tissue bone and joint manipulations, cupping (an ancient technique that uses suction and heat to create better circulation in local areas, dietary therapies and more. The goal in TCM is to find the root of the problem in a person’s body and address it. No band aids just fix the imbalance.

How do you find a good acupuncturist? Health care practitioners can be a resource for referral to acupuncturists. More medical doctors, including neurologists, anesthesiologists, and specialists in physical medicine, are becoming trained in acupuncture, TCM. One must be careful in choosing an acupuncturist. Many MD’s and chiropractors are able to take a couple of weekend courses (totaling around 100 hours) in TCM .That’s all! Compare that to 2850 hours a student at The Colorado School of TCM has to complete in order to sit for the National Certification Committee in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) exam. This is the national body that governs licenses. So when seeking aid of and Acupuncturist please make sure that they are properly trained and licensed but the NCCAOM.
