Are you sleeping OK ?

Having problems with your sleep? About 35 million Americans have issues with insomnia. It is not unusual to have sleep troubles from time to time. But, if you feel that you do not get enough sleep or satisfying sleep, you may have insomnia, a sleep disorder. People with insomnia have one or more of the following: difficulty falling asleep; waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep; waking up too early in the morning; unrefreshing sleep.

Insomnia can cause problems during the day, such as sleepiness, Fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and irritability... Insomnia is not defined by the number of hours you sleep every night. The amount of sleep a person needs varies. While most people need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep a night, some people do well with less, and some need more.

Our bodies use the hormone melatonin to help regulate our sleep-wake cycles. When our body’s exposure to light decreases, the pineal gland (located in the brain) makes serotonin and then converts it to melatonin. Taking supplemental melatonin seems to stimulate sleep when the natural cycle is disturbed. Although several studies have supported the use of supplemental melatonin to treat insomnia, there are also many studies that have found this supplement to have no effect.

Another great treatment is Traditional Chinese’s medicine (TCM). The goal here is to treat the “root” of the problem. Insomnia can be diagnosed in several ways. A licensed practioneer will usually treat their patients using a combination of acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, and other modalities to address the imbalance.
